In case you missed it last night, Melfort Mustangs goaltender Austin Rediron helped his squad to a 5-2 win over the Kindersley Klippers and not just by stopping the puck.
Rediron chipped in with an assist before icing the game with an empty-net goal with nine seconds remaining in regulation.
It was an aggressive play by Rediron who had actually made an attempt at the empty net a few moments earlier. On the first attempt, the native of Meadow Lake came out and stopped the puck in behind his own net before turning at his own goal line and firing it towards the Klippers end of the rink. The shot went the distance, but missed wide right for an icing call.
Down by two goals, head coach/general manager Rockie Zinger had pulled his own netminder Evan Weninger in an effort to knot the game.
After controlling play off the draw, which can be seen in the video above, the Klippers headed to centre ice and Weninger returned to the bench. Losing control of the puck at centre ice was forward Stefen Seel. Rediron saw his opportunity and raced Seel to the puck just inside the blueline, beating the Klippers forward and essentially one-timing his final attempt right into the heart of the gaping cage.
The Mustangs now travel to Battlefords to take on the North Stars tonight at 7:30.
