It was a summer of change in the border town of Flin Flon as the SJHL’s Bombers added a number of new faces, particularly behind the bench, ahead of tonight’s season-opening game with the Melfort Mustangs.
Head coach Mike Reagan filled out his coach staff with the additions of Emery Olauson (formerly of the Weyburn Red Wings and Estevan Bruins) and Chris Hatch. Mark Hewitt also joins the Bombers as their new trainer.
After posting a stellar 0.927 save percentage in 2012-13, Devin Buffalo returns between the pipes for the Bombers. The 20-year-old went 23-14 with three shutouts last season.
Most recently, the club traded forward Greg Wiwcharuk to the North Bay Trappers. Wiwcharuk subsequently retired from junior hockey. The Bombers received future considerations in exchange.
The Bombers then shipped out 1993-born defenceman Tanner Clark and 1995-born defenceman Keifer Schaufler to the OCN Blizzard of the MJHL in exchange for former Kindersley Klipper blueliner Sean Whelan and future considerations. The 1994-born rearguard posted one goal and four points in 32 games with the Klippers in 2012-13. The native of Moose Jaw, Sask. also snuck into 11 games for the Regina Pats last season, registering six penalty minutes and a minus-six rating.
The Bombers fire up the 2013-14 SJHL regular season when they visit Melfort tonight before returning home to host the rematch tomorrow evening.
